Silicone & Sunless – Not a Good Mix!

on June 14, 2012

Ever wonder why that Sunless cocktail you just did….didn’t really take? You were so excited about getting that great UV tan and then jumping into that Spray Booth to get extra, extra dark. Well you looked great when you left the salon but even after waiting 4 hours to shower you swear your sunless washed right off?

Well, maybe you’re right!

Reason is….some of the tanning products currently available contain Silicone. Silicone acts as a sealant, locking in moisture and other ingredients that are blended into the product. This is a major plus when used in UV Tanning…plus it helps the product go in much easier(that smooth feel).

Downside. As it’s sealing in that moisture it’s also acting like a protective barrier on your skin. So anything applied AFTER using a silicone based product will be prevented from being properly absorbed. So if you get a sunless tan after using a tanning accelerator that contains silicone you are in essense blocking the sunless from being absorbed into the skin.

Net effect…the sunless is only then applied on the skin’s surface…the cosmetic color and only your very top most layers of the skin absorb the DHA. Thus, when you take a shower…most of it comes off. So Silicone & Sunless….not a good mix!

One more thing to remember…silicone is also contained in certain tan extenders as well. So, even applying a silicone based moisturizer in the morning could cause a sunless spray problem.

Just another reason to ask “What products your clients are using to ensure they have the best sunless experience possible.”

Note: Silicone based tanning products are great for UV Tanning so don’t stop carrying them…it’s just mixing them with Sunless applications can cause customer satisfaction issue’s!
